Jimi Hendrix – Bold as Love (Guitar cover) – Martín Alcalá Rubí – Damoosic Pre Recording sessions for the multi-instrumental video.
Bold as Love is a really amazing Hendrix tune, from many perspectives. Lyrics as well as music are wonderful, definitely one of Jimi’s geniality demonstrations as creative and composer.
The lyrics describe a ride, and probably some personal issues using colors as metaphors. Purple, Green, Yellow, Blue, Turquoise, Red, Orange, Yellow, and finally the composition: The rainbow. Very ludic and creative form of expression.
From the musical analysis it also shines. Typical Hendrix’s paraphrasing and fighting-with-the-tempo phrasings are used along different parts as in “My red is so confident that he flashes trophies of war, and ribbons of euphoria”. You really get to understand the difficulty to interpret it when you try to play it and sing it at the same time. Not even mentioning the prowess of singing the song, and playing at the same time like Mayer does in his version. My goodness, you’ll need two brains for that.
Studying the guitar playing of the song in very interesting. Lots of counterpoints with the flowing lyrics that match flawlessly. I think that the phrase that most surprises me is the semi arpeggio or scale bordering done in A major at the beginning of the bridge. It’s son uncomfortable to play but sounds so wonderful.
What are your thougts about this wonderful song? interpretations? other versions cooler than Mayer’s on the web?
